Report: Amir's ban could be extended

Pakistan pacer Mohammad Aamir's five-year spot-fixing ban could be extended if the ICC finds him guilty of breaking the terms of his suspension by turning up for a Surrey club.

The 19-year-old has insisted that he was under the impression that the match was not competitive cricket but it remains to be seen whether the argument would hold ground in the ongoing ICC investigation.

"Mohammad Amir could have his five-year worldwide ban for spot fixing extended after breaking his suspension by playing club cricket in Surrey last weekend," reported 'The Daily Mail'.

Aamir turned out for Addington 1743 against St Lukes in a Surrey League division one fixture on June 4.

The ICC is investigating if that was in violation of the terms of Aamir's ban.

"I asked the club representatives if the match fell under the jurisdiction of the ECB and they informed me that the match did not. I spoke to several club representatives about the issue and they all told me that it was a friendly and therefore would not contravene my ban from the ICC," Aamir has stated.

"I was informed that I was fine to play. I would not be stupid enough to knowingly play in a match that I knew would contravene my ban," he said.

ECB asks ICC to clarify Amir's ban

Embarrassed after Mohammad Amir played in one of its club matches, the England Cricket Board has sought clarification from the ICC on the terms and conditions of his ban.

The development comes after the ICC confirmed it was investigating reports that Amir, despite the five year ban for spot-fixing, had played in an English Division One match in Surrey league.

The ICC ban on Aamir - and his Pakistani teammates Salman Butt and Muhammed Asif - bars him from participating in the game at any recognised level and his turning up for the English club side could be in breach of the ICC terms and conditions on his sanction.

The source said the ECB had told the PCB that they were also investigating the matter but had also asked the ICC for clarification on the exact conditions of the sanction as Amir says he was told by the club organisers it would be alright for him to play in the match.

When contacted, a senior official of the PCB said they were looking at the Amir issue but not taking it seriously.

"As far as we are concerned the ICC bans specifically states that a banned player cannot play in any event or tournament that is organized, sanctioned or approved by the home Board or its affiliated units," the official said.
